Bidhan Chandra Roy, was born at Bankipore in 1882, a neighborhood of Patna, and did his Maths Honors from Patna University. A Brilliant student, he , got admission at both Bengal Engg College and Kolkata Medical College, he opted for the latter.

"Whatever thy hands findeth to do, do it with thy might."- This quote at Kolkata Medical College was to be B.C.Roy's motivation always. With his father retiring as Dy.Collector, he had to support himself on a scholarship while studying medicine, and lived frugally.
The Bengal Partition stoked a nationalist fervor, however Bidhan Roy, felt he needed to complete his medicine first to serve nation.Joining the Provincial Health Service, he , impressed with his dedication and hard work, also practiced privately too,

Bidhan also applied for the St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London, he was however rejected first, due to his Asian background. He however did not give up, kept applying, and after 30 trials, he finally got admission at St.Bartholomew's in London.

Completing his MRCP and FRCS from England, Bidhan Roy returned to India in 1911, and he began to teach at Kolkata Medical College. He believed that only a healthy, fit population could fight for Swaraj well, and dedicated his efforts towards that.

Jadavpur TB Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, Victoria Institution were all set up by Bidhan Roy.Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for women and children was started by Bidhan Roy in 1926, he also trained women in nursing.

In 1925, Bidhan Roy, won from Barrackpore as an Independent, defeating Surendranath a member of the Congress, he  did a good job in organizing the Civil Disobedience in Bengal in 1929.

As Mayor of Kolkata, Bidhan Roy worked for providing better education, better health care, improved lighting, water supply. When he  took over as CM of Bengal in 1948, it was faced with the immense challenge of rehabilitating Partition refugees.
Bengal was rocked by communal riots, unemployment, and the huge refugee influx after Partition then. Within 3 years, Bidhan Roy, managed to ensure law and order returned back to Bengal, and the Partition refugees were resettled

Durgapur Steel Plant and the township was due to the efforts of Bidhan Roy, under whose reign it started.Salt Lake City was conceived as a modern planned township during his  time, it was later renamed after him.

In 1961 he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, and he passed away in 1962 at the age of 80, on his birthday. Bidhan Chandra Roy passed away on the same date he was born, July 1, his contribution to Bengal would forever be remembered though.
